Certainly there has been a lot of activity in trying to use AI to improve wireless network operation. In this month’s article we take a look at what has been done and what impact it has, or may have, on wireless telecoms performance. Your comments and critique can be input … Read MoreCan 5G Survive Without AI?

Smartphones Will Get Even Smarter With On-Device Machine Learning

Engineers are on the cusp of on-device machine learning, as evidenced by the first NIPS workshop on the subject in late 2017, and the advent of new neural processors, such as Kirin 970 from Huawei and Snapdragon 845 from Qualcomm. Thus far, progress in artificial intelligence has been fueled primarily by the availability of data and more computing power. Classical machine learning has mostly been built on a single central node (usually in a data … Read MoreSmartphones Will Get Even Smarter With On-Device Machine Learning

Microsoft unveils AI capability that automates AI development

Microsoft unveils AI capability that automates AI development The tedious but necessary process of selecting, testing and tweaking machine learning models that power many of today’s artificial intelligence systems was proving too time-consuming for Nicolo Fusi. The final straw for the Microsoft researcher and machine learning expert came while fussing over model selection as he and his colleagues built CRISPR.ML, a computational biology tool that uses AI to help scientists determine the best way to perform gene … Read MoreMicrosoft unveils AI capability that automates AI development

Verizon 5G home Internet: $70/month, 300Mbps to 1Gbps speeds, no data caps

Verizon Wireless will start offering a 5G-based wireless home Internet service next month in parts of four US cities, with service coming to other cities at an as-yet-unspecified date. “Typical” download speeds will be around 300Mbps. The max speed of nearly 1Gbps will be available “depending on location,” and there will be “no data caps,” Verizon said. The speeds are fast enough to rival Verizon’s fiber-to-the-home service, and the carrier has previously claimed that its … Read MoreVerizon 5G home Internet: $70/month, 300Mbps to 1Gbps speeds, no data caps
